Photos and Commentary

  • This blog is mostly devoted to photography. I'm still learning, and each photograph I take teaches me more about how to do it better the next time.

I like this quote by Jacques-Henri Lartigue: “I take photographs with love, so I try to make them art objects. But I make them for myself first and foremost - that is important.”

    Thanks for visiting!

Inside the Basilica of Saint Louis

Posted by blueheronbobcat on June 10, 2010

I like visiting different churches, but because of my religious upbringing I always feel a little uncomfortable walking around and photographing them. I feel that these buildings should be treated reverently. But as long as I show respect while I am there no one seems to mind. These three photos were taken inside the Basilica of Saint Louis, The King, while I was touring the downtown St. Louis area. I really love the soft blend of colors.

City Worker

Posted by blueheronbobcat on June 7, 2010

I was recently touring the Saint Louis area and saw this city worker basking in the early morning sun under one of the beautiful arched bridges in the downtown area. I couldn’t resist taking this photograph.

Miami Skyline

Posted by blueheronbobcat on June 6, 2010

I recently spent a few days in Miami and had a beautiful view of the city from my hotel room.  Although it was quite rainy each afternoon and evening, I was able to get a few good shots of the Miami skyline.  The first photo is one that was taken in the early evening.  The original photo was pretty but I applied a nighttime effect to it.  The second photo is a 3 shot HDR composite taken at night, and I did a pastel filter on it provided by NIK software.  So, to clarify a confusing explanation, the first photo is a daytime photo with a nighttime filter effect, and the second photo is a nighttime HDR composite that looks more like a daytime shot (except for the city lights which are illuminated).  Go figure….

Dragon Boat Races

Posted by blueheronbobcat on April 30, 2010

These photos were taken at a Dragon Boat competition in Tavares, Fl. I applied different effects to each photo, mostly different watercolor effects, and added the border. The Dragon Boat races are held each year in Tavares, but this was my first time attending. I was using an 18-200mm Nikon zoom lens, and I found that 200mm was just barely long enough to get the photos I wanted. Maybe next year I will have a 400mm or better to work with.

Can you do this?

Or this?

How would you like to be on the bottom of this stack?

I can’t imagine myself ever doing any of this, but these girls gave an interesting performance recently at a festival in Tavares, Fl. I have to admire anyone with that much flexibility in their body, and I greatly enjoyed the performance.

Princess Cay Canoes

Posted by blueheronbobcat on April 26, 2010

This is a revised version of a photograph previously posted. Based on comments I received I took an HDR version of the photo and applied a watercolor effect to it. I also cropped it to get more focus on the canoes. I like it better this way. My wife says it looks like something you would see on a postcard. I’m not sure if she is complimenting the photo or not. 🙂

A Saturday Afternoon in Tavares

Posted by blueheronbobcat on April 18, 2010

Tavares is the County Seat of Lake County, Florida.  It’s a combination of the old and new, and it’s where the court house, jail, and most government agencies are located.   It’s also one of the many places in Central Florida where antique car enthusiasts love to gather.  These photos were all taken recently at a festival in the city, and they show some of the people and things that I observed.  I adjusted all of the photos with my normal sharpening, levels, etc. routine, and then I used Topaz Adjust to tone map them.  A border was then added.  Many people comment that my photos look almost like comics, but I like this look right now.  It’s probably a phase I’m going through.

Leader of the Pack

Posted by blueheronbobcat on April 14, 2010

This is a motorscooter rental shop that I saw in the Caribbean last year while on a cruise.  I thought it was interesting how the scooters were all lined up in a row with the one yellow scooter out front.  It reminded me of a pack of motorscooters, with their leader out front, just waiting for me to make a move.

This “Skyblazers” F-86F Sabre jet put on an exciting exhibition at the Tico Warbirds airshow in Titusville Florida recently. He was doing bombing and missile simulations, and did this napalm simulation as part of the show. I was panning on the speeding jet as it raced passed us, about 25 feet above the runway, when all of a sudden this huge ball of flames shot up from the ground. I immediately put the shutter in motion, hoping to get a shot as he flew past the flames. I was lucky, and got this photo.

Easter Sunrise

Posted by blueheronbobcat on April 4, 2010

I got up early to view the Easter Sunrise, and decided to take my camera. It was foggy and humid where I was, and the mosquitoes were hungry. The Sunrise was not as spectacular as I had hoped for, but all in all it was a great morning. After all, this is a day of celebrating something wonderful!
